Do you talk too fast? In our fast-paced, hectic, and often stressful society, many people tend to have this communication problem. While speaking quickly is not necessarily an issue in and of itself, some people do so the expense of clarity, diction, and coherency, which may seriously inhibit effective communication.

Below are four common reasons why a person may speak too fast:

1. Some people talk fast because they’re thinking “a mile a minute” and are trying to keep up with their own thoughts. This is particularly true with many extroverts, who tend to “think as they speak” rather than “think before they speak.”

2. Some individuals speak quickly out of nervousness and anxiety—they increase their rate in order to get their communication “over with,” but the expense of clarity and diction, resulting in mumbling or jumbled speech. This particular phenomenon may apply to introverts as well as extroverts.

3. Certain people naturally speak fast because they were socially conditioned to do so from a young age. For example, a child with rambunctious and highly vocal siblings may feel constant pressure to “speak quickly and speak right away” in order to get a word in and receive attention.

4. For those who speak English as a second or third language, if the rate of their native tongue is inherently faster than English, they may inadvertently speak English the rate of their birth language, resulting in fast English articulation.

Regardless of the reason(s), many people who speak quickly may also be communicating ineffectively. Speaking fast without taking time to slow down or pause when appropriate may have the following, undesirable effects:

Higher vocal pitch with less strength and powerLower clarity and articulationMore “umm…s” and “ahh...s” (fillers)Reduced comprehension by the listenerReduced communication impact on the listenerImportant points in the message may be lost or de-emphasized.The speaker may seem less poised and less grounded, lacking gravitas. The speaker may be perceived as having lower credibility.

How can you slow your speaking rate and sound more composed? Below are four helpful tips, with references from my books: How to Improve the Sound of Your Speaking Voice and Ten Tips for Presentation Confidence and Reducing Nervousness:

1. Monitor your own speaking rate. When you notice yourself speaking “a mile a minute,” simply pause or slow down. Say to yourself or to the listener: “I’m speaking too fast. Let me slow down.”

2. Ask for reminders. If you know speaking fast is a habit of yours, it’s perfectly okay to let people around you know so, and give them permission to tell you when you’re speaking too quickly. Say something to the effect of: “I am a fast talker. Feel không lấy phí to let me know, and I’ll slow down.”

3. Use bottled water as a prop. A simple “trick” to help get around speaking too fast is to have a bottled water next to you as you speak and drink from it regularly to create natural pauses. This works in social conversations, professional meetings, as well as public speaking situations.

4. Build pauses into formal communication. If you’re delivering a stand-up presentation or speaking a group meeting, create cues on presentation slides or in meeting notes to remind yourself to pause. One easy way to do so is simply to stop between key points and ask the listeners if they have any questions.

If someone speaks slowly, does that mean they are dumber or is that just a perception?

I speak pretty fast, but wouldn't say that I'm a genius.... There are lots of people far more clever than I am

No, it doesn't. But stuttering, umming or a lock of fluidity can indicate bad understanding (but of course it can also indicate nerves). Lots of very intelligent people speak slowly because it's much easier to get your head around difficult concepts if you have time to process the last word before the next hits you.

No. It could probably, in some situations, mean that the person's vocabulary is not very sound, but it hasn't got anything to do with intelligence as such.

Or, the reason could possibly be that they're foreign and not speaking their native language?

The speed of speech is hardly a relevant factor when judging someone's intelligence.

Those who take time to think before they speak, tend to be more intelligent.

Steven Hawking can't speak all.

Intelligent people speak slowly when they are explaining things to less intelligent people.

I speak very very fast.. so umm, no.. it definatly doesnt Does talking fast mean you are smart?

infact it can be a drawback, often people find it hard to understand what im saying, old people have a hard time, if its in a loud place I have to really think about slowing down my speach, etc.. (not made better by that I get quicker as im nervous)

There's a difference between competence (what we can do) and performance (what we actually do) when it comes to language and speaking in particular. Our performance is affected by external factors such as nerves, tiredness, visual or audio distractions all of which may reduce the speed of speech but also the quality. Apart from the disorders which show evidence of a link, I would say that for most people, there isn't a strong correlation between the speed of speech and intelligence.

In my experience people who speak very fast or very slow are less intelligent. One cant process thoughts quickly enough and the other just says whatever comes into their head. Best to think quickly but quality control your speech

The cast of TOWIE could probably talk very fast about fake tan and manicures, so, not necessarily.

You'll tend to speak more quickly when discussing topics that you know inside out, but I don't think there's any correlation. What you say is a better indicator of intelligence than the speed which you say it.

Many gifted individuals experience various types of heightened awareness and may seem overly sensitive. These sensitivities may be to physical senses such as sight, sound, smell, movement and touch. For example, they may be extremely uncomfortable when they have a wrinkle in their sock, or unable to concentrate because of the sound of a clock ticking on the other side of the room. Sensitivities of the gifted are often due to mental and emotional over-awareness. For example, picking up on the feelings of someone close to them, having extreme sensitivity to their own internal emotions, and taking in external information a significantly higher rate than those around them. These various kinds of sensitivities often mean that the more gifted an individual is, the more input and awareness they experience, leading to the contradiction of them needing more time to process than others who are not gifted.

...which will lead to many gifted people requiring more time to express themselves, presumably. Assumptions in this thread about speed of processing indicating intelligence aren't really valid because more intelligent people may well absorb more of their environment than the less intelligent. We can't really proportionate speed of processing vs degree of awareness, which would be a more valid way of drawing conclusions about intelligence from speed of thought.

I'm not aware of any link, and even if there was a trend I'd expect very poor correlation.

Have you ever heard Sarah Palin speak? She speaks pretty fast, but everything that comes out of her mouth is a pile of toss

It's not about how fast it comes out... it's about what comes out that determines whether a person is dumb or not.

Depends, the Doctor talks very fast and he is very intelligent.
I can speak quite fast sometimes, but that's because I ramble out of nerves. My thought processing is actually really slow, much slower than people expect Does talking fast mean you are smart?

Agreed. Also, some people take it as a sign of nervousness? One interview I went for, they mistakenly thought I was nervous and didn't get the job. I don't know why exactly, but the only thing I can think of is that I talked too fast perhaps?

Im glad I didn't, because it was a pretty rubbish role in a call centre, and I now have a more professional role a much bigger company

Speaking quickly isn't a sign of intelligence. It isn't really a trait that people should try for either since it just leads to mumbled words and confusion if you go too quickly.

They do. It's a reason why public speakers are trained to slow down their speech. If you're constantly rushing what you're saying it can give off the impression that you aren't composed.

What does it mean if a person speaks very fast?

People interpret fast talking as a sign of nervousness and a lack of self-confidence. Your fast talking can make it appear that you don't think people want to listen to you, or that what you have to say is not important.

Is it normal to talk fast?

Certain people naturally speak fast because they were socially conditioned to do so from a young age. For example, a child with rambunctious and highly vocal siblings may feel constant pressure to “speak quickly and speak right away” in order to get a word in and receive attention.
